The Last Day

Sunday, October 20th, 2019

Today was our last day in Washington/DC, as well as the last day of the whole trip.

The day started for most of us with packing our suitcase and trying to keep it below the weight-limit, which turned out a little bit harder than we thought…
We met at 10:30 am in the lobby with our packed suitcases. Due to the rainy weather, we decided to stay in the hotel where we waited in a meeting room for the shuttles which would take us to the airport. After a while we decided to order pizza and other food at Domino’s for lunch. So at 12:23 pm we completed our order and waited for the arrival of our food. After one hour we started to become nervous because the food had not been delivered whereas the shuttle busses were planned for 2:05 pm. So we were worried that the delivery would not be on time, and that we would miss it because we were already on the shuttle bus. But at 1:40 pm the relieving message came in that the food was at the hotel. We were able to finish our meal just in time because this time the shuttle bus was very punctual. So, we all finally arrived happy and with a full stomach at the airport.

As soon as both shuttles dropped everyone off, we checked in to our flight. Fun fact: Mifi stuck out again, this time because her suitcase was too heavy…
When this was sorted out we went through the security-checks and rode the train to our gate. As we all arrived well in time we were allowed to spend the time until boarding at 5 pm on our own. But at 4:25 pm we all received an message from Lukas that we should come to the gate as soon as possible. When we arrived there we got the wonderful message that our group was removed from the flight we had booked and we would have to take a plane which would fly 4 hours later. As compensation we received a $15 food voucher with which we were able to eat wherever we want before the departure of the plane. But another nice point of this whole change of flights was that we were going to fly across Germany two times because instead of flying to Amsterdam (which was the original plan), we were flying to Munich and from Munich back to Düsseldorf…

So at 10:30 pm our plane left and it turned out it was not booked out completely so we all were able to change seats and to have a complete row for ourselves. Therefore almost everyone had enough space and had a comfortable flight.
For the whole change of flights we got a credit note with which we can fly a year with delta. Fun fact: it can only be used by someone who is over 18 years old. Another fun fact: no-one of us, except for the teachers, is over eighteen…

However, our plane arrived almost in time at 12:30 pm (German time) in Munich. The connecting flight was supposed to be boarded at 2:05 pm but because of a short delay, they changed the gate and at approximately 2:50 pm we were finally on the plane. This flight took only about 50 minutes, so it was fine.
As soon as we arrived in Düsseldorf, we collected our suitcases, made our way to the exit and went to the bus, which was going to take us back to Heinsberg (of course, that bus also had to be re-scheduled, thanks to Höninger for their flexibility!)

Around 5:30 pm the bus arrived in Heinsberg and everyone was happy to be back home and with their families!
